Welcome to my architecture page. Out of a list of different topics I chose architecture for my GCSE theme. The reason I chose architecture is because I can use a range of techniques and processes throughout this theme.
mind map
berenice abbott
Berenice is an american photographer, she photographs of architecture and urban design of the 1930s. She was born in 1898 and died in 1991. In 1923 she became an assistant in the photography studio of Man Ray, and two years later she first saw the photographs of Eugene Atget. I do find Abbotts pictures a bit basic and simple, however I would take pictures inspired by Bernice Abbott to then develop them as whole new images.
Lucien Hervé
Lucien Herve was born on 7 August 1910 in Hungary, He died on the 26 June 2007 and was a French Photographer of Hungarian origin. He had a drive, not just for picturing structures and the forms of a building, but by showing many shadows and natural light which left his images after editing them, showing the use of contrasting between black and white
my pictures
stephanie juny magic paris ii
This is a photo that I had to write about, I tried to re make a similar photo using slow flash syncro and also overlap it on photoshop.
For these photos I used a filter on a photo app on my phone. The filter just over laps the photo on top of the original photo. I then used slow flash syncro to take some more pictures, but it gave more of a blurry look instead of overlapped.
Editing the pictures using photoshop
layering photos using the photocopier
To create these images I printed out my original photos that I took on A4 then I put them in the photocopier and reprinted them on A3 paper. Then as the new picture came out on the A3 paper I put it back into the printer and moved the original picture around the photocopier to re print the picture overlapping the first one. As I overlapped the images I used different colours by changing the colour setting on the printer.
how and why i came up with this idea
I experimented with this idea by using the photocopier to reprint the photos that I took. To get these outcomes I played with the functions on the photocopier which added the overlapping in different directions and added colour to the original photo. I found this idea myself by trying to find ways how to overlap pictures like the picture by Stephanie Juny and using her idea of the overlapping I found a new way to overlap photos that come out in many different ways and you can re do this process many times.
final idea
To create my final idea, I am going to be using photoshop to edit my pictures, by adding colour to certain parts of the image. Then I am going to put them through the photocopier and play around with the image to get my final outcome.
After the photoshop process, I moved on to using the photocopier. I put in my two images that I took and edited then placed it in the photocopier and printed out A3 developed versions. After this I put the A3 versions back in the photocopier and printed them out over and over using different colours and placed in different directions.

I mounted my work on to card paper and then lightly cut through the pictures but not all the way so that it would be able to fold and become three dimensional. The reason I have done this is in order to give the images the structure of a building. This is how they turned out.
As my final idea, I placed the images in front of a white screen and then used the lights to create the shadows. I did this because I wanted to show a skyline view / silhouette background.
For my unit two theme, I chose Architecture because I feel out all the other themes I was given to choose from architecture was the one I could do the most exploration.
The artists I have researched for this theme included Lucien Herve and Berenice Abbott. The first artist I have researched was Lucien Herve, what intrigued me the most about his work was his use of shadows to contrast the black and white tones in his image. I took his idea of contrasting colours and made my own versions using a variety of colours. I then researched Berenice Abbott and I discovered that she used modern architecture which I did find interesting as she photographs the structures of buildings, However I preferred Lucien Herves work as his work was more unique whereas, Berenice Abbotts were simple and similar to many artists But I used her idea of details in modern buildings.
Throughout this theme I have been able to create a range of images that I was able to refine and develop into new images with different techniques and processes. One advantage of exploring with different techniques was that I was able to play around with a variety of settings in digital editing environments. My original photos were inspired by Berenice Abbott, but then I altered them using the same idea that Lucien Herve used in his photographs which by two contrasting colours in one image. I used this idea but instead used brighter colours. After experimenting with the images in the photocopier, I then had the idea of structuring the images to look like architectural buildings. Even though I really liked the outcome of my new images, however, this wasn't the final project. My final idea for the finishing project was to place my structured images against a white wall and use a projector to show a silhouette behind the images. This is so that the shadows create a skyline city view. I am pleased with my final outcome because during the process of creating, I learnt how to work well with photoshop and and I can re use these skills and techniques for the future. Also the skyline view reminds me of main cities like London and New York, which are places that I have been to and enjoyed, and by looking at my finishing project it brings back good memories.
