everybody street |
I have just watched 'everybody street'. Its about street photography in New York. It includes photographers like Joel, Meyerowitz which said "street photography is a way of learning how to read your own culture", Boogie, Elliot Erwitt, Jill Freedman, Martha Cooper, Bruce Gilden, Mary Ellen Mark and Bruce Davidson. They enjoy photographing on the street because they are experiencing it and seeing whats going on. Also there is more interesting pictures to take for example; children playing, graffiti, dangerous equipment (knifes, guns..), vehicles, culture etc. Some of the equipment that was used are; Medium format camera - for slower photography used by Bruce Davidson, Leica 35 mm hand camera and also a Pentax SLR.
When your out taking photos on the street, there can be many risks, you could get beaten up because you decided to take a picture of someone that didn't want there picture taken or taking pictures of dangerous weapons, at dangerous places. But photographers wont hide away from that, they go closer to the danger just to capture the image otherwise if they backed away they would have nothing to be amazed by and they would feel disappointed. Some people carry round guns and knifes and they ask for there photograph to be taken, they want to be noticed and seen. Most pictures are of graffiti on trains and without those pictures we wouldn't notice that there ever was graffiti on trains because now its all been banned.
What makes a successful street photograph is being there, experiencing it and just being part of it, otherwise its just an image cant relate to because you couldn't capture what you saw. Showing the real streets and the peoples views, finding out what it really is like and seeing it for yourself and not just hearing what other people heard. There are a lot of subjects that interest them like in the first paragraph I mentioned children playing, graffiti, dangerous weapons vehicles... Photographs of children playing are not just them in the park or holding hands its children jumping of balconies and landing on dirty mattresses and clumped up rubbish, children climbing high fences, making things out of used objects they would find on the floor. Its images of children doing completely different things that we would think of or do.
Photographers always carry out there cameras just so they don't miss anything. They would put there camera in front of strangers face and just take the photo without saying anything or warning anyone. They sometimes get stopped or they could even get respect and people might not mind what he is doing. Photographers take pictures so its not ephemeral which means things that doesn't last forever and once they got a photo of a man clicking his fingers or clapping or something that just goes in a second it means that he's got it forever in one photo so its not ephemeral.

first set challenge 1 ways of seeing
At school our class were doing a street photography project and we had to go outside, around the school with an ipod and use the app huelles to take these photos. Huelles is an app that takes pictures black and white. I really liked this app because it focused my pictures and they came out in great quality. I started of taking pictures of the walkway then moved on to people up close, I didn't take many pictures but I have on my phone that will be added on this page. This challenge was quite easy because you just have to go around where a lot of people are and take pictures of all the different things you see. E.g a group of boys, boy standing on his own, back of girls hair ect.

I really like this photo that Bruce Gilden has taken because he got a good close up of the woman's reaction and the blurred theme in the background really makes the photo effective and the woman stand out. As you can see in this photo the focused woman had no idea that the photo would be taken it was a surprise to her. Her face tells us that she is shocked and worried. The last thing I particularly like about this photo is that it is black and white which makes the image more recognisable.
second set photo challenge 2 bruce gilden
Today in photography we had to take pictures of our classmates faces while they were walking around the room. These pictures were inspired by Bruce Gilden who took pictures of people holding a flash in one hand and a camera in the other. The reason he did that is because he knew he would get great pictures of peoples reaction because they would be shocked, surprised or even angry and upset. That is what made his photos effective. For these photos to be like his we used a normal digital camera and used a setting called 'slow flash syncro' why did we have to use that specific setting? well what it does it keeps the shutter on for longer so when a person is moving while the photo is being taken you will be able to capture the points of where that person moved. I have made a diagram showing 'using slow flash syncro' below.
third set slow flash syncro
These photos are the same as the ones above because we used slow flash syncro but they were taken outside and of people we don't know instead of our classmates.

photo challenge 3 diagonals
Photo challenge 3- Diagonals The images below are highlighted red to show where all the diagonal lines are. The reason we did this was to show how diagonal lines actually effect the picture. For example the second picture (where the boy is holding his bag), the diagonal lines are effective because if you look at the bottom right you will see the red line going across towards the boy. The cool thing about this particular line is that it goes right past the boys hand without touching it and the first place when the red line is on the boy is between his lower and upper body. Another thing is that it goes right on his shoulder with the boy looking right at it. The end of the red line is at the exact corner of part of the walkways. The last thing is that most of the lines join up perfectly in the middle and one line sits right on top of his head and the point on his hair fits right in the corner of the two diagonal lines.
fifth set
These set of pictures were for my homework. I had to go and take Bruce Gilden inspired pictures and upload them to this page. I went to many places including camden, London bridge station, fairs and other places. Unfortunately I didn't take many because I wasn't always on my phone and I found it hard to take pictures discreetly. Next time I will take more pictures and make sure there not blurry.
rule of thirds
useing photoshop for rule of thirds
In the original picture the woman was not in the centre but by using photoshop I could put the woman in the centre and place her so her head is in the top middle square, her middle part of her body is in the centre square and her legs are in the bottom middle square.
final pieces
For my final piece of street photography this is what I had done. To do this final piece I asked people what there favorite shop was and they had to write it on a piece of white card paper and sit on the outside stairs in our school and hold it in front of their face. I decided to make them sit on the stairs as it looked unpleasant and rough which links to what I think of when I hear the word 'street' and I wanted the idea of this street to be an unknown rough street. Also It contrasts to the brands they had wrote because you wouldn't find these shops in a dark unknown rough street, but you would find these shops in a popular street, well known.
