Who was Anna Atkins?
Anna Atkins was born 16 March 1779 in Tunbridge, Kent, England and died 9 July 1871. She was the first person to create cyanotypes and also the first woman to create a photograph. Her interests were to collect dried up plants and use them to make cyanotypes. From 1843 to 1853 she collected seaweed and were finally released as a 12-part series. In 1853 Anna Atkins teamed up with her childhood friend, Anne Dixon, who began to collaborate in creating photograms of ferns, flowers, feathers and lace. These photograms became an artistic expression altho that was not her goal. |
Our class made cyanotypes by going outside and putting objects on a blue piece of paper and letting it out in the sun. After we had to hold the paper to our chest to make sure no light gets through. When we went back to the classroom we put it under water to make the chemicals dissolve. We also made another cyanotype by going in to a dark room with red light so it doesn't affect the cyanotype paper.
My Cyanotypes
photogramA photogram is a photo taken without a camera being used. We do this by placing objects on shiny paper and show it to the light. The object covers the light so the paper covered by the objects turn pale. After we put it into 3 liquid chemicals and we left it in water until all the yellow chemicals wash out, after it turns all blue with the objects on the paper turn white so you can tell what objects you used. It doesn't take long and you only show It to the light for 10 seconds. You put it in to the three different chemicals for 1 minute each chemical and then do the steps above.
