In lesson my teacher gave the class a task to go around the school with the ipods and take about 20 pictures that relate with edges. Below are all the pictures I took that I think have edges or they are related to edges.
All the pictures I took have different edges for example: circular, rectangular and triangular. Also I took them from many different angles that I think makes it more interesting to look at. Some of these pictures look blurry or unfocused because the ipod does not have the best camera or focus to take a good picture.
Here are more of 'edges' pictures but this time I took them on a camera.
Some of these photos are a little bit blurry and unfocused, so next time I know to make them all focused. Also I think that all these pictures have edges. There are circular ones and also straight ones, but they make the picture more effected because if it was a picture of a blank wall there wouldn't be much interest in looking at. Even though everything has an edge, the best pictures to take are ones with many edges and lots of different shapes e.g. the building is made up of lots of rectangles such as the building it self, windows, doors, bricks, stairs...
These are all the pictures I took with my camera at home. The first picture is all the outlines of rooms and also my dog. In the third picture (wine rack) the lids of the wine bottles are all in different levels and there are some coming out and some hiding away which I thought would make a good picture where as the wine rack has squares which makes the picture even more better especially when the squares make clear edges. The reason I took a picture of the chair is because there was so many outlines/ edges in the background and the chair itself had a cross shape which made the whole picture full of edges. In the sixth picture, the reason I took it was because of all the draws and all the draw handles which makes it interesting. I especially like the picture with the fork because its just the outline that makes you want to really look at it. My favourite picture I took is the second to last one because the stairs look cool because it starts by going up then it turns sideways and all the lines just makes the picture really interesting.
randy grskovic
Randy Grsvick is an artist/curator from toronto, ontario. He takes old/found images and changes them by cutting them up and putting them in different orders or changes shape to make them interesting.
This is one of my favourite images because the centre of the image has been put forward in a diomand shape. The edges are difficult to see as it has been blended in with the rest of the image. He rotated the diamond shape halfway (180 degrees) so that the diamond shape could stand out more.
I understood how to use photoshop very quickly and easily. In this picture I chose a puzzle shape because it has many corners (edges) which I think makes the photo more fun and interesting to look at.
Here is the original and the edited version.
This is what photoshop looks like. I edited this photo that i took myself. As you can see its been changed around from the original photo which is on my 'edges' page. The original picture is also below if you cant find it. I really like this image because when I first took it I thought it was boring and it wouldn't look good on my website, but then I knew that i could adapt it and make it more fun by placing the words in the wrong places, rotating them and placing random letters in the blue blank spaces so it wouldn't look empty.
My classmate took these photos of me on the DSLR and I used them to make a photoshop picture. The pictures at the bottom is what I made.
Here is a picture I made on photoshop. At school my classmate took a photo of me and I chose to use it for my final piece.
This is me holding my final piece that I made.
evaluation
Throughout this course I have found a variety of photographers that I am intrigued by, for example: Andreas Feininger, Cornell Capa, Loomis Dean, Eliot Elisofon & Randy Grskovic. I found some of these photographers in a book that I was reading and it had a lot of information about who they were before they took photographs, what they worked as and especially which photos they took and how they took them. While reading this book I picked up a few quotes and learned that there are many ways of taking a photograph and turning it into something extraordinary or just something completely different to what you would of expected. One of the quotes I really liked was - "to try to take pictures that are impossible to take." - by Eliot Elisofon. The reason I loved this quote is because it makes you think outside the box and to try and take pictures that you thought you would not be able to take.
I explored all about edges and how they can be important and stand out in a photograph. I explored about how there is edges in everything especially a plain wall, when you take a photograph the leans already captures the edges which turns out to be just the outside of the photo. At first I never thought that one edge can make a big difference in a photo, I also thought that the theme of edges couldn't of been that interesting to work with, as soon as I done some more research and made a few pictures that I took or even editing them by using Photoshop, I discovered that working with 'edges' changed my old opinion into a completely different idea of what I thought it would be. Now I know that it can turn a normal photograph into something more fun, interesting and cool just by playing around with it, cutting it and then moving it to different places.
So far I have made different pieces of work where I had to use different pieces of equipment. One of the first things I made was a cyanotype. Making a cyanotype I had to use the darkroom and the equipment in there. Tis is how I made the cyanotype; first I got photographic paper and youse the shiny side of it, the reason I used the shiny side of the paper is because it will only work that way. After that I put random things on the paper which was; scissors, pins, half my hand and a blusher brush. I chose all these things I had because I knew that the light would go through them so the picture would turn out well. Then all I had to do was turn the light on for 10 seconds and put it in 3 different liquid chemicals and then the picture would show. After finishing the cyanotype, I couldn't add more to it because it was a piece that was already finished. My second piece of work was making photograms then leading on to pinhole, camera obscura and then working with Photoshop. Photoshop was one of my favourite things because you could just mess around with your own photo and make it look cool. With Photoshop you had to go out and take a picture you like or get a classmate to take one of you and then you can develop it by adding shapes to it or moving your face around, upside down and in completely different places.
What worked well? Using Photoshop and looking at my final piece I thought it all worked well for example; there was nothing that I disliked, there wasn't any bits that went wrong. It all turned out the way I wanted it to be. What did you find challenging? Well at first I was struggling to use Photoshop, I thought it was quite difficult and it would take a long time to get used to but throughout that hour I had in school, I learned how to use the things I needed to use for my finale piece and I didn't have a problem with it after all. After I made a few pictures using Photoshop I chose to develop them by using the same picture but creating a different edit, so basically just choosing a new shape and making it different to the one before. What changed along the way? All the photos that I took and made were quite good, I didn't dislike any but the reason I liked them all is because I never edited a picture and liked it, I always kept changing it around to make it look good so nothing really changed along the way but the only thing that did change was me trying to get a good photo and the only way to do that is to see what way you like it first.
The final outcome for this personal project turned out well. There are pages that are filled with detail and pictures but there are also pages with not much writing on it but full of pictures. I really think that I have done well in this unit and I have produced some really good work although I definitely think that I can push my self harder and come up with even more great ideas for my final piece, but I am really happy with what I already have and next time I will do what I said which is to think more outside the box and come up with better ideas and maybe learn how to take pictures of things I wouldn't normally take. I was hoping to create a picture of me that had been weaved. The reason that didn't work is because I chose to use Photoshop for my final piece instead and I'm glad I used Photoshop instead of the weaving technique because the Photoshop picture came out really good.
I have explored the edges theme successfully because I managed to get the things I wanted to do done and I also managed to find out a lot about different photographers and there interests about what kind of photos they take. In this theme I really think that I have produced some good work that I never thought I would be able to do and that's how I know that I have explored this theme successfully. If I had more time I definitely would have tried some weaving because its like a real life Photoshop with your own hands and the picture that I weaved might turn out amazing, interesting & different to what I would of expected. Also I have never tried it before so it would of been fun to have a go.
What's personal about my work is that I'm proud of it and I am proud that I had a go and tried many things to make it something I enjoy looking at and appreciating that its mine. The fact that its also personal is because its mine and I'm the one who created it and it means a lot to me because it did take time (not long) but it didn't take a minute or two but it took some time but in that time I really enjoyed it and the fact I was making something that I knew would mean a lot. When people see my work or even visit my website I hope they understand that I enjoy making photographs and using Photoshop and all the things I have created, and I hope they understand how to make it and the process & steps you need to go through to complete it. Finally I hope they enjoy my work and really like it.
